What do you get out of it?

The queue moves at the speed of the scanner. Point the phone camera or a scanner gun at the barcode and the product lands on the bill already priced, already checked against stock — no searching a list while someone waits with their basket.

How does it work?

  1. 1

    The camera is the scanner

The Android app reads barcodes through the phone camera, so the cheapest hardware you need is the phone in your pocket. A USB or Bluetooth scanner works the same way if you already own one.

  2. 2

Scan resolves to the exact variant

The code maps to a specific product variant, so the 500ml and the 1-litre come up as themselves with their own price and their own stock, rather than as one product you then have to pick a size for.

  3. 3

Price and tax come with it

The selling price, the HSN code and the tax rate you set on the product are applied as the line is added. Nothing is typed at the counter, so nothing is mistyped at the counter.

  4. 4

Scan the same item twice to add two

Repeat scans increment the quantity rather than creating a second line, which is what you want when someone is buying six of something.

What situations does it handle?

An item with no barcode on the packet

Print your own. Generate the SKU, print a barcode label as the stock arrives, and it scans like anything else from then on.

A worn or torn barcode

Search by name or SKU and add the line manually. The bill is identical either way.

Two products that look alike

This is exactly where scanning earns its keep — the code distinguishes the 200g from the 500g even when the packet design does not.

How do you get more out of it?

  • Barcode your fastest-moving lines first. Those are the ones that decide how long the queue is on a Saturday evening.
  • Keep a printed sheet of labels for loose or repacked goods near the counter, so anything without a maker's barcode still scans.
  • Train whoever covers the counter on scanning before anything else — it is the one skill that makes the whole system faster than a calculator.

Common questions

Do I need a barcode scanner machine?

No. The Android app scans with the phone camera, so you can start with the phone you already own. A USB or Bluetooth scanner also works if you prefer one at a fixed counter.

What if a product has no barcode?

Generate a SKU for it and print your own barcode label as the stock arrives. From then on it scans like any branded packet.

Does scanning apply the right price and tax?

Yes. The code resolves to the specific product variant, and its selling price, HSN code and tax rate are applied to the line automatically.
