What do you get out of it?
A product is priced and billed in the unit you actually sell it in, and that unit prints on the invoice. A customer reading the bill sees pieces, packets or litres rather than a bare number they have to interpret.

The unit sits on the variant
Each product variant carries its own unit, so the same brand sold as a piece and as a case can be described correctly in both forms.

It follows onto the invoice
The unit is stored against the invoice line, not looked up afterwards. Reprint a bill from six months ago and it still reads the way it did the day it was raised.

You choose the vocabulary
The unit is free text, so you use the words your trade uses — box, pkt, dozen, mtr, kg — rather than picking from a list written for somebody else's shop.

Purchases speak the same language
Buying in the same unit you sell in keeps stock arithmetic honest and makes the supplier's invoice easy to check against yours.
What situations does it handle?
Sold loose and in packets
Keep them as separate variants with their own units and prices. Each then carries its own stock and its own margin.
Trade names for units
Free text means a phrase your customers recognise is as valid as a standard abbreviation.
A customer asking for a case
Set the case up as its own variant with the case price, rather than doing arithmetic at the counter every time.
How do you get more out of it?
- Use the same abbreviation everywhere — pick pkt or packet and stay with it. Consistency is what makes reports readable later.
- Set units while adding products; adding them afterwards means editing records you have already billed against.
- Where you sell both a single and a bundle, price the bundle as its own variant so the discount is deliberate rather than mental arithmetic.
