What do you get out of it?

Revenue and expenses side by side, month after month. One glance tells you whether more is coming in than going out, and whether that has been getting better or worse.

How does it work?

  1. 1

    Both sides on one chart

Revenue charted against expenses rather than revenue alone, because a strong sales month with a stronger buying month is not a good month.

  2. 2

Month by month, so direction shows

A single figure tells you very little. A run of months tells you whether what you changed is working.

  3. 3

Built from the bills and purchases you recorded

Both series come from documents you already raise, so the chart needs no separate bookkeeping to stay current.

  4. 4

    Any range you set

Read six months to see a trend, or two years to see a season repeat.

What situations does it handle?

A month you bought heavily

Expenses spike and the gap narrows. Reading several months together is what stops that looking like a crisis.

Festival seasonality

Compare the same month last year rather than last month, or the season will read as growth every time it comes round.

A slow month after a strong one

Normal in retail. The chart's value is the pattern, not any single bar.

How do you get more out of it?

  • Read this first each month; everything else is detail once you know the direction.
  • Mark what you changed — a new line, a price rise, a promotion — and read the following months against it.
  • Compare year on year for anything seasonal. It is the only comparison that holds.

Common questions

Can I see my revenue trend by month?

Yes. Revenue is charted month by month against expenses over whatever range you choose, so you read direction rather than a single figure.

Does the chart include my expenses?

Yes. Both series appear together, because sales alone do not tell you whether a month was good — what you spent buying stock has to sit beside it.

Where does the data come from?

From the invoices and purchases you already record, so the chart stays current without any separate bookkeeping.
