What do you get out of it?

You learn which lines actually carry the shop — and the answer by quantity is usually different from the answer by value. Both are worth knowing, and they lead to different decisions.

How does it work?

  1. 1

Ranked by quantity and by value

The item you sell most units of and the item that brings in most money are rarely the same. Seeing both stops you optimising for the wrong one.

  2. 2

Built from the bills you raised

The ranking comes from actual invoice lines, so it reflects what left the shop rather than what you meant to push.

  3. 3

    Over the period you choose

Any date range, so a festival fortnight can be read separately from an ordinary month.

  4. 4

    Down to the variant

Because sales record the specific variant, you learn which size sells rather than only which product.

What situations does it handle?

High units, low value

Typical of small staples. They earn their space by bringing people in, which is a different job from earning margin.

Low units, high value

A few large sales can carry a month. Worth knowing so you notice when they stop.

A seasonal spike

Compare the same period last year rather than last month, so a festival does not read as growth.

How do you get more out of it?

  • Never let a top seller run out — read this list against low stock before every buying trip.
  • Check top sellers by value against their margin; a strong seller with a thin margin is a candidate for renegotiation, not more shelf space.
  • Look at what is not on the list. Products absent from it after three months are the ones tying up your capital.

Common questions

Which products sell the most in my shop?

The top selling products report ranks lines by units sold and by value over any date range you choose, drawn from the invoices you have actually raised.

Why does the ranking differ by quantity and by value?

Because a cheap fast-moving staple tops the quantity list while a smaller number of higher-priced sales tops the value list. Both are true and they lead to different decisions.

Can I see which size or variant sells best?

Yes. Sales record the specific variant, so the ranking tells you which pack size or colour is moving rather than just the product.
