What do you get out of it?
You look up an HSN code once, when you first add the product, and never again. From then on it prints on every invoice and lands in the right row of your HSN summary at return time — so the part of GST filing that usually eats an evening becomes something you do not think about.
How does it work?
- 1
Set the HSN on the product
The HSN code is stored on the product record itself, alongside its tax rate, rather than being typed per invoice. One product, one code, entered once.
- 2
It rides along on every bill
Because the code lives on the product, every invoice line that uses that product carries its HSN automatically. There is nothing to remember at the counter and nothing for a cashier to get wrong.
- 3
It aggregates into your GSTR-1 HSN summary
At return time your sales are grouped by HSN and rate to produce the HSN summary the portal asks for, built from the invoices you already raised rather than compiled by hand.

Look codes up without leaving your work
If you do not know a product's code, the free HSN code search tool on this site finds it by description, so you can classify a new product without digging through the CBIC schedule.
What situations does it handle?
Same HSN, different tax rates
HSN and tax rate are stored as separate fields on the product, so two products can share a code while carrying different rates — which happens more often than the rate schedule suggests.
Products added before you started caring about HSN
Codes can be filled in later on existing products. Invoices raised after that point pick up the code; historical invoices keep what they were issued with, which is correct — a filed invoice should not change retrospectively.
Bulk classification for a large catalogue
HSN codes are part of the bulk product import, so a catalogue of several thousand items can be classified in a spreadsheet and brought in at once rather than product by product.
How do you get more out of it?
- Classify a new product the day you add it. It takes a minute once and then applies to every future bill, report and return automatically.
- Use the free HSN code search on this site to look a code up by description before you save the product — no need to open the CBIC schedule.
- Setting up a large catalogue? Put HSN codes and tax rates in your import spreadsheet and bring in thousands of products already classified.
- Ask your CA to sanity-check your top 20 products by revenue. Those few codes drive most of your HSN summary, so getting them right covers most of the risk.
Common questions
How many digits of HSN do I need to show?
It depends on your turnover, and the requirement has tightened over time — smaller businesses report fewer digits than larger ones. Wiseventory stores whatever code you enter and prints it on the invoice, so the digit count is a decision you make with your accountant based on your current turnover slab.
Where do I find the HSN code for my products?
Use the free HSN code search on this site to look up a code by product description, or check the CBIC rate schedule directly. Once you have it, save it against the product and it is applied from then on.
What if I sell services rather than goods?
Services use SAC codes, which occupy the same field. The behaviour is identical — set it once on the item and it appears on every invoice and in your summary.
Does the HSN code affect how tax is calculated?
The tax rate on the product drives the calculation, and the HSN is what justifies that rate to the department. They are stored separately for exactly this reason, so getting the code right is about correct reporting rather than about the arithmetic on the bill.
