What do you get out of it?
You can answer the question every shopkeeper eventually asks their accountant: how much money is sitting on my shelves right now. Valued at cost, split by category, current as of this moment.
How does it work?
- 1
Valued at what you paid
Standing stock is priced at cost rather than at what you hope to sell it for, which is the figure that matters for working capital and for your books.
- 2
Split by category
The total is broken down across your categories, so you can see which part of the shop is holding the cash rather than only that the cash is held.
- 3
Per variant, so it is real
Each variant's own stock and cost feed the total. A product sold in three sizes contributes three accurate figures rather than one averaged guess.
- 4
Current, not a snapshot you took
Because stock moves as you bill and receive, the valuation reflects today rather than the last time someone did a count.
What situations does it handle?
Stock with no cost price entered
Fill the cost in and it joins the valuation. This report is the best prompt there is for finding products with the field left blank.
One category holding most of the money
Common, and worth knowing. It is usually the clearest signal about where to slow down buying.
Slow-moving lines
Read the valuation next to your sales report; value sitting in a category that barely sells is the working capital worth freeing.
How do you get more out of it?
- Read it before your buying trip, not after. The number changes what you order.
- Compare month to month rather than reading it once — the direction tells you more than the figure.
- If the total surprises you, look at the category split before anything else. The answer is almost always in one category.
Common questions
How much stock value do I have in hand?
The inventory valuation report totals your standing stock at cost, broken down by category, using each variant's own quantity and cost price.
Is stock valued at cost or selling price?
At cost. That is the figure that reflects the working capital tied up in inventory and the one your accountant will ask for.
Is the valuation up to date?
Yes. Stock moves as you bill and receive, so the valuation reflects the position now rather than the last manual count.
